Obverse:
IACOBVS D G MAG BRI FRA ET HI REX. Crowned bust r. with value mark XII behind.
Reverse:
QVÆ DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET. Large shield.
Slight wave to flan otherwise very fine and very rare, especially so in this condition. During the second coinage, the mintmark Trefoil was used for the short period between 28th April 1613 to 20th October 1613, when silver coin production was already steadily declining. In his die study of James I shillings, the late Gary Oddie was only able to locate 19 examples of this mintmark for the second issue shilling, with these dies not represented.
