Obverse:
CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRAN ET HIB REX. Crude horseman left, 'W' below
Reverse:
EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI. Declaration RELIG PROT LE AN LIB PA in two lines, three plumes above and date 1644/3 below.
Very fine, toned and very rare.
This reverse die was used in Bristol in 1643 and subsequently recut to 1644 when moved to Worcester. This was first noted by J. Vincent when this was attributed to Weymouth, in his article ‘Unpublished information upon Charles I Weymouth mints’ BNJ 28 (1955-57), pg. 169-70. This obverse die continued to be used at Worcester and was paired with the crowned square-topped shield reverse, as Brooker 1140.
