Cnut 'Quatrefoil' Silver Penny London
Cnut Silver Penny
Quatrefoil
Ties behind bust
Wynsige on London
1.05g 18.3mm
Spink - 1157
North - 781
Obverse:
CNUT REX ANGLO. Crowned bust left within quatrefoil.
Reverse:
PYNSI ON LVNDENE Long cross over quatrefoil with pellet apex.
Peck mark on the obverse otherwise good very fine. The low ties behind the bust very rare, especially for London and not represented for this moneyer on the EMC/SCBI. This reverse die is a match to SCBI 14 Copenhagen, Part III B number 3026.
"On a number of dies there are diadem ties behind the crown, and while at Chichester this seems to have been a standard element of the design, at the London ateliers it appears to have been used only rarely but with some purpose (pl. 13.9:20=Hild. 190). This subject deserves further study generally, not limited to a single type."
