Edward The Confessor 'Pyramids Type' Silver Penny Winchester
Edward The Confessor Silver Penny
Pyramids Type
Ælfwine on Winchester
1.09g 18.9mm
Spink - 1184
North - 831
Obverse:
EADPARD RE. Crowned and bearded bust r. with sceptre in front.
Reverse:
IELFPINE ON PIN. Small voided cross, pyramid with pellet top in quarters.
Struck using a flawed reverse die, good very fine and much as struck.
This coin was listed by Seaby as being from the Thetford mint, with the legend reading ON ÐET. It was included in Freeman, being the only example of Ælfwine for this type at Thetford (No. 30 - This coin). Unfortunately, their attribution was mistaken and the coin reads ON PIN, the obverse is a die match to Harvey die E, used at Winchester, although this reverse die is not listed. Dr M. Allen has confirmed that no other examples of Ælfwine on Thetford have come to light since the Freeman publication, so this moneyer has now been removed for the Pyramids type at Thetford.
