Cnut 'Quatrefoil' Silver Penny Sudbury
Cnut Silver Penny
Quatrefoil
Brunman on Sudbury
0.99g 18.5mm
Spink - 1157
North - 781
Obverse:
CNUT [REX] ANGLO. Crowned bust left within quatrefoil.
Reverse:
BRVNMAN M SVD. Long cross over quatrefoil with pellet apex.
Double struck on the obverse otherwise very fine and exceptionally rare. There is another example in the Copenhagen Royal Collection, SCBI 15 - Number 3719 from the same dies, with the obverse equally double struck with and unconfirmed mint listing as Southwark or Sudbury. This coin was studied by Smart for the detailed thesis on the moneyers of Cnut to Harthacnut and was determined to be of Sudbury.
"The last example has the mint-signature SVD. On Dolley's criterion (BNJ =11267) that in Quatrefoil the products of the Southwark mint are distinguished by the inclusion of G in the legend even at the expense of unusual forms of abbreviation such as SVG, this coin should be attributed to Sudbury. The presence of the [moneyer's] name at the adjacent mint of Colchester further suggests that this attribution is the correct one."
