The John W. Garrett collection was originally established in 1860 by his farther T. Harrison Garrett and was added to by John until his death in 1942. It then went to the Johns Hopkins University, where it remained until the late 1970s. It was at this time that the university determined that the collection, which was in a vault and not on display or particularly available for scholarship, should be sold and the proceeds directed to other areas of the university. The sale of this collection realised a total of $25 million, a record at the time for the most valuable collection ever sold.
