Henry II Silver Penny 1b York
Henry II Silver Penny
Class 1b1
Turkil on York
1.42g 20.9mm
Spink – 1344
North – 963
Obverse:
HENRICVS REX. Facing crowned bust holding sceptre. Hair in 2 curls left and 5 right, stop before REX.
Reverse:
TVRKIL ON EVER. Voided short cross with quatrefoil in each angle.
Very fine, scarce and the die sinker’s error exceptionally rare and interesting. Better in hand.
A die engravers error with the reverse short cross design, mistakenly punched onto the obverse die and later over punched with the portrait, leaving the short cross design in the fields, also H of HENRIC over H?. There is a similar but poorer example in SCBI Mass, number 313-4 (1b1 – Reinald on London) with notes ‘traces of rev. design under portrait on obv’ and another example sold by us in January 2022, also a class 1b - Iefrei on London - D1456
