Henry II Silver Penny 1b
Henry II Silver Penny
Class 1b
Iefrei on London
1.32g 20.1mm
Spink – 1344
North – 963
Obverse:
HENRICVS REX. Facing crowned bust holding sceptre. Hair in 2 curls left and 5 right, stop before REX.
Reverse:
IEFREI ON LVND. Voided short cross with quatrefoil in each angle.
Small edge chip otherwise very fine. The die sinker’s error exceptionally rare and interesting.
A die engravers error with the reverse short cross design, mistakenly punched onto the obverse die and later over punched with the portrait, leaving the short cross design in the fields. There is a similar but poorer example in SCBI Mass, number 313 (1b1 – Reinald on London) with notes ‘traces of rev. design under portrait on obv’.
Since selling this we have also located two other examples, both of the same class with similar altered obverse dies; Turkil on York - our reference D1607 and anther Iefrei on London - Spink Numismatic Circular, Apr 1992 - Number 1790.
