Ex Stamford Hoard, 1866
The Stamford Hoard was discovered on October 22, 1866, when a labourer named Richard Christian was digging a drain at the east end of St. George's Church, Stamford. His pickaxe broke into a brown clay pot which was found to be filled with approximately 3000 groats ranging from the reign of Edward III to the early part of that o Edward IV. A number was retained by the British Museum and the majority of the surplus were eventually purchased in three parcels between December 1879, and April 1880 by dealers, W. S. Lincoln and Son.
