John Silver Penny 5b1 Lincoln - CA Mint Error
John Silver Penny
Class 5b1
Andreu on Lincoln
Die sinkers mint error with CA for Canterbury
1.33g 18.7mm
Spink - 1351
North - 970
Mass - 1526
Obverse:
HENRICVS REX. Crowned facing bust with sceptre in right hand.
Reverse:
ANDREV ON CA. Voided short cross with quatrefoil in each angle.
Edge split and associated perforations otherwise about very fine. Extremely rare and interesting die sinkers mint error ‘CA'. Same die pair as the single Mass example, number 1526 and also same obverse as 1525 (ANDREV ON NIC).
G. Gittoes noticed this error, which became the subject for his paper 'When is a mint-signature not a mint-signature?', read to the British Numismatic Society on 24th June 1980. Gittoes used die-links to show that this class 5b1 reverse die, Andreu having a Canterbury mint-signature was used with a class 5b1 obverse die supplied to Lincoln and that a similarly classified London reverse die with this moneyer's name was used at Winchester.
