Good very fine, toned, very rare and interesting.

Throughout the numerous sales of this coin, the mint has often been debated and cycled between being attributed to Lincoln, Lewes and London depending on the cataloguer. A moneyer Beorhtmær was active during William I coinage at London. London mint signatures are often seen as L, LV and LVN, the latter two occasionally cut as LII and LII-I as ligated VN. Beorhtmær was also active during Willaim II coinage at Lewes, with mint signatures known as LI[EP]. Doubleday had an example in his collection with the same legend reading (from different dies), which was catalogued as being from London in the Glendining 1988 sale (lot 729), this was later sold through Baldwins being attributed to Lewes and believed unique (Baldwins Auction, 5 Mar 2005 - Lot 121). It is our view that the most likely mint for this coin is London, although the exact attribution will remain uncertain unless an obverse die match, with a full mint signature reverse comes to light.

Ex Hartland Collection

Ex Baldwins, 29 Sep 1956 - £4.10.0 - Ticket notes "In BMC Brihtmier does not strike at Lewes in Wm I"

Ex Glendining Auction, 15 Jun 1954 - Lot 182 (Part) - "William I, type V, Lincoln, Brihtmier"

Ex Spink Numismatic Circular, Mar 1938 - Number 69349 - BRIHTMÆR ON LI. Note although this coin has been ascribed to Lincoln (LI), yet as Brihtmaer is a Lewes moneyer and who also spells Lewes with LI, the latter would seem to be the correct assignment.

With Spink stock ticket, 1937 - with Lincoln corrected to Lewes

Ex Sotheby's Auction, 30 Jul 1934 - Lot 92 - "Type V, ?of London, BRIHTMIER ON LI, fine and scarce"
