Good very fine or better, struck on a neat and round flan with all the essential details centred. Although the exact alloy content cannot be ascertained without individual metallurgical analysis, the research conducted by Dr D. Robinson would estimate the gold content for this weight to be somewhere between 6 and 17%.
Ex Chris Rudd - 2008 £200
Ex Brightstone Hoard.
The West Wight 'Brightstone' Hoard was initially discovered on the 19th October 2005 by a group of metal detectorists on the Western side of the Isle of Wight. The first find, which this coin belongs, consisted of 967 Cranbourne Chase staters. A number of coins were found concentrated in one spot together with part of the base of an hand-made jar of middle to late Iron Age, others were discovered scattered throughout the surrounding plough-soil. In May 2010 another 20 staters were found and then in April of 2011, a further 3 staters, bringing the total to 990 coins. The hoard was recorded as treasure case 2005T443 and subsequently disclaimed, being returned to the finders. Registered on the PAS as IARCH-E99EF3.
